Phaseolus coccineus
“The matter with human beans is that they is absolutely refusing to believe in anything unless they is actually seeing it right in front of their own schnozzles.” — The Big Friendly Giant
Phaseolus coccineus, commonly known as the runner bean, is a significant gift from the New World. Cultivated by the Aztecs, it was introduced to Europe post-Conquest and has since been grown in various regions, including the Netherlands. Young pods can be harvested and prepared like green beans. • Autumn: Allow pods to mature and dry; inside, you’ll find vibrant seeds, often pink with blue speckles, reminiscent of “magic beans.”
Cultivation Tips:
• Sowing: After the last frost, typically from mid-May, sow seeds directly into well-drained soil or large pots, about 2.5–5 cm deep.
• Support: Provide structures like poles, trellises, or fences for the vines to climb, as they can reach heights of 3 meters or more.
• Spacing: Plant 2 to 3 seeds around each support, with supports spaced approximately 15 cm apart.
• Germination: Seeds typically germinate within 7–14 days.
